My name is Ilias Gkoumas, and I am a Family and System Psychotherapist. From a very young age, I developed an interest in human relationships and their interactions within the human system.

I have always found it interesting to provide an answer to why people make different decisions under different circumstances and how their lives are shaped by those decisions. This interest multiplied during my studies in the Department of Social Work, both through courses in Psychiatry, Psychology, and Sociology, and through my internships in various settings.

Meeting people from different cultures, who used both ‘different’ languages to communicate and yet had such ‘similar’ needs, sparked in me the desire to learn one of these different languages, Sign Language. I studied Greek Sign Language for four years through the Federation of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

The moment I decided to pursue Psychotherapy came during my internship at one of the ESYTHEPAS facilities, which gave me the opportunity to attend the four-year study program in Family and System Therapy. This allowed me to explore the dynamics of human relationships, both among family members and within broader human systems, and to further illuminate their unique characteristics and the need to create a new language of communication between them.

I truly feel that every story a person shares about themselves in therapy is magical, and it is a great honor to co-create that story in such a way that it is written as the person would like it to be. For this reason, the techniques I have chosen come from the school of Narrative Therapy.
